MILLERTON FIRE COMPANY - About Us
ABOUT THE MFC

The Millerton Fire Company protects roughly 43 square miles in the Town of Northeast, which includes the Village of Millerton.
Currently, they are operating with two engines, one rescue, two ambulances, and a mini-pumper. A tanker and a quick-attack engine
are being manufactured, slated for arrival in the 2010 calender year.

HISTORY

Following a devastating fire at a large hotel in the village proper, it was decided that an organized fire department was needed. The
village trustees met on January 4, 1892 at the Millerton National Bank, and resolved that a fire department be organized. At that
meeting, twenty charter members were appointed. One month later, a vote passed naming the new fire department the E.H. Thompson
Hose Company, named after Edward Harris Thompson (1850-1921), the president of the Millerton National Bank. The first fire Chief was
Mintline Morgan.
On March 7, 1892, the first hose cart was purchased by the village at a cost
of $49.50. This initial piece of fire apparatus was housed in a building on main
street known as Nichle Plate Hall. In 1904, the first actual fire house was built on
Dutchess avenue, currently the site of the  Village Hall. In 1922, a Brockway
chemical engine was purchased, becoming the first motorized apparatus for the
company. In October of 1924, the E.H. Thompson Hose Company became
known as the Millerton Fire Department.
In 1942, the Millerton Ambulance squad was formed with Silas Dewitt serving
as it's first Captain. The first ambulance was a 1932 Nash Hearse purchased
from local funeral director O.W. Valentine at a cost of $600. The first Fire Police
unit was formed in 1947. In 1962, a new fire house was built on Century Blvd, the current Fire House site. On July 18, 1992, the
Millerton Fire Department celebrated it's centennial, highlighted with a parade and carnival. In 2004 the Millerton Fire Department
became independent of the village, forming a fire district to include the village and the Township.
Now an incorporated Fire Department, is known as the Millerton Fire Company and serves the auspices of the Northeast Fire District.
Handling over 400 calls per year, the M.F.C. has a current active membership of 68 fire/ems personnel.

A special thanks to the Historical Committee for the above - especially Dave Vandebogart.
